Optical calculator

GPON Calculator

Estimate an FTTH/GPON optical budget with fiber, splitter, connectors, splices, engineering losses and operating margin.

GPONFTTHODNOptical BudgetdBG.984.2

Optical budget inputs

Model the ODN with configurable assumptions or the actual splitter insertion loss.

Theoretical splitter mode

Uses the ideal division loss 10·log10(N). Real splitters add excess/insertion loss; use the datasheet mode for final engineering.

Prefer the maximum insertion loss specified for the actual splitter/branch.

Check the complete optical operating window

GPON optical path-loss classes define operating ranges, not only maximum loss. B+ uses 13–28 dB and C+ uses 17–32 dB references. The final design must also respect the actual transmitter power, receiver sensitivity and receiver overload of the selected equipment.

SPLITTERS

Ideal division loss is not real insertion loss

10·log10(N) represents ideal power division for a 1:N splitter. Real splitters also have excess loss, connector effects and manufacturing tolerances. For final engineering, use the actual insertion-loss specification whenever possible.

MARGIN

Receiver margin and engineering reserve are different

Margin above sensitivity shows how far estimated RX is above the configured sensitivity. Margin after design reserve additionally subtracts the engineering reserve requested by the designer. This distinguishes a link that merely reaches sensitivity from one that also preserves operational headroom.

FINAL VALIDATION

Use equipment and passive-component datasheets

Transmit power, receiver sensitivity, overload, fiber attenuation, connector loss, splice loss and splitter insertion loss depend on the actual design. Treat this result as an engineering planning calculation and validate the final ODN with vendor specifications and field measurements.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is splitter loss exactly 10·log10(N)?+

No. That is ideal division loss. A real splitter has excess/insertion loss and tolerances. Use the actual datasheet value for final engineering whenever possible.

Why are there two margin values?+

Margin above sensitivity compares estimated RX with receiver sensitivity. Margin after design reserve also subtracts the engineering reserve you want to preserve.

Can I use -28 dBm sensitivity for every ONU/ONT?+

No. It is only a default editable input. Use the value specified for the actual optical class and equipment model.

Is lower optical loss always better?+

No. Receivers also have overload limits, and GPON path-loss classes include minimum-loss references. Excessive received power can be a problem.

Does this replace field measurement?+

No. It is a planning calculator. Commissioning and troubleshooting should use the equipment specifications and appropriate optical measurements.
