BGP / ASN Lookup

Inspect BGP announcements, RIPE RIS visibility, observed AS paths, ASN neighbours and RPKI state.

BGP analysis modules

Choose an operational view. All external routing queries use RIPEstat through the project integration layer.

Routing overview

Query an ASN, a single IP or a CIDR prefix.

RIPE RIS

Observed BGP data is not the same as the complete Internet

RIPE RIS route collectors receive BGP information from many peers around the world. The result is a broad and useful operational view, but every collector has its own perspective and visibility changes over time.

AS PATH

This tool shows observed paths instead of inventing a route

The previous implementation attempted to simulate a path between two ASNs. This version removes that concept. Looking Glass results come from paths actually reported to RIPE RIS collectors.

RPKI

RPKI validity belongs to a prefix + origin ASN combination

A public or routable IP is not automatically RPKI valid. The validation endpoint compares a specific prefix and origin ASN with Route Origin Authorizations and returns valid, invalid ASN, invalid length or unknown.

SPECIAL USE

“Bogon” is displayed with a more precise classification

Instead of treating every non-global address as one generic category, the page identifies common private, loopback, link-local, documentation, multicast, benchmark and reserved ranges for IPv4 and IPv6.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does the Looking Glass simulate an AS path?+

No. It displays BGP paths reported to RIPE RIS collectors for the queried resource.

Does an ASN neighbour mean upstream?+

No. The RIPEstat neighbour endpoint reports adjacency in observed AS paths. Commercial relationships cannot be inferred reliably from adjacency alone.

What does RPKI Valid mean?+

The prefix and origin ASN match an applicable Route Origin Authorization according to the RIPE NCC validator used by RIPEstat.

Does RPKI Invalid prove a route hijack?+

No. It requires investigation. Misconfiguration, an incorrect ASN or an outdated or overly restrictive ROA can also produce an invalid state.

Can I validate an individual IP with RPKI?+

Yes. The tool first maps the IP to its routed prefix using RIPEstat Network Info, then validates that prefix with the ASN you supplied.

Does a global-looking IP necessarily have a BGP route?+

No. After local special-use classification, the page can consult RIPE RIS Network Info to see whether the IP maps to a routed prefix in that data source.

Why can another looking glass show a different path?+

BGP is perspective-dependent. Collectors have different peers, policies and available paths, and observations also change over time.
